Nasra’s sister is a University of Minnesota-trained dentist and her mother was a gynecologist in Somalia. With the help of IEC’s International Adult Academy, the 24-year-old Somali immigrant is following in family footsteps. She’s working toward becoming a doctor to help all women.
Coming to IEC after failing the Accuplacer test – a requirement to enter college – Nasra routinely spends all day studying. And her skills – especially in math – are exceptional, teachers say.
“I didn’t do well on the Accuplacer because my reading was low for college – that’s what they told me. But if I stay at this school for 10 hours a day for six months, I think my English will be good.” Nasra’s goal is to be a doctor by age 30.
