Lincoln Adult Education Center (LAEC) Program Overview
·
ABE/ESL program – one of 52 ABE consortia in the state of MN
·
Offers mostly English as a second language (ESL) classes
·
Most
learners are adult immigrants and refugees
·
Located in the heart of downtown Minneapolis
·
A
program of the Institute for New Americans, a non-for profit
community based organization, which also runs Lincoln International
High School
·
Provide ESL and basic skills classes customized for a particular
employer at their worksite to their employees
·
Offer
accent reduction tutoring to professionals at LAEC or the employees’
worksite
·
Other
classes and mini-courses offered at LAEC include math, citizenship,
basic reading and writing, advanced reading and writing
·
Offer
workshops at LAEC on such topics as personal safety, how to get into
college, how to start a small business, how to choose an immigration
attorney, and other topics of interest to the adult
immigrant/refugee community
·
Collaborate with many partners in the metro area
·
In
2005, awarded certificate from the state of MN as a “Program of
Excellence”
