Why Volunteer at Lincoln Adult Education Center (LAEC)?

Volunteers at Lincoln Adult Education Center help students to improve their English skills and also serve as connections to the larger community and the culture of the learners’ new home.  In return, volunteers have the opportunity to learn about the students’ lives and their different cultures and gain valuable experience interacting with a diverse and motivated group.

What can Volunteers at LAEC do?

Lincoln Adult Education Center has a large variety of volunteer opportunities available. Volunteers at LAEC may assist a teacher in the classroom or computer lab, teach small groups, tutor students outside of the classroom, lead special workshops and classes for the students, or help with administrative tasks.  Click here for more details.

What Volunteers Should Know

Attending the Minnesota Literacy Council (MLC) ESL tutor pre-service volunteer training or a similar training is highly recommended.  Also, having experience working with non-native speakers of English and studying a foreign language are helpful but not required.  The essential requirements of a volunteer are patience, flexibility and a good attitude. For information on the MLC trainings and in-service opportunities, please visit http://www.themlc.org/trainingregistration.html.
